Scholarly literature (from at least the Renaissance on) is choc-full of ancient-looking names that aren't actually attested in ancient sources. The most common class of these are latinate forms of Greek names, where it's only the Greek form that's actually extant in a primary source. But there are other examples of geographic names inferred from ethnic names (e.g., Bruttium, which is not attested, for Bruttii, BAtlas 46 D3, note introduction p. 696, first paragraph). Medieval and Renaissance-era Latin forms also appear commonly in secondary literature, as (presumably) for Cologne: Agrippina (where BAtlas only recognizes Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium).
The Atlas Project rigorously excluded names of this class.
Yet, scholars and students alike need to be able to find information about these places when they encounter such pseudonyms in the literature. We need a separate class of name (or field, like modernLocation) in which to record this information so that it can be searched and reported.
Many thanks to bdturner for surfacing this long-dormant issue.
