Cross-Project Interoperability

The following proposals arise out of discussions with staff/participants of the Portable Antiquities Scheme, the Inscriptions of Roman Cyrenaica Project and the Digital Coins Network.

Note: I'm going to refactor what follows, but for the moment, a couple of links to example documents I'm working up for particular use cases:

Collaborating projects will want to be able to make the following assertions about Pleiades content:

A primary source presented or cataloged by the project is related to 1..n places cataloged in Pleiades

    • The precise coordinates are x,y
  • The primary source was originally located at a single Pleiades place
    • The precise coordinates are x,y
  • The primary source was last seen at a single Pleiades place
    • The precise coordinates are x,y
  • The primary source may have been found at 1..n Pleiades places
  • The primary source provides information about 1..n Pleiades places

A primary source presented or cataloged by the project is related to 1..n places not cataloged in Pleiades

  • The primary source was found at a single new place
    • The precise coordinates are x,y
  • The primary source was originally located at a single new place
    • The precise coordinates are x,y
  • The primary source was last seen at a single new place
    • The precise coordinates are x,y

  • The primary source provides information about 1..n new places

A primary source presented or cataloged by the project contains 1..n specific names cataloged in Pleiades

  • The primary source possibly contains 1..n specific new names

A primary source presented or cataloged by the project is dateable to XYZ

  • The date(range) is certainly XYZ

Assertions Made by Pleiades

Pleiades will "point at" either primary or secondary records in external contexts through bibliographic references (both print and "e"). The Pleiades data model, and relationships therein involving places, names, locations and bibliographic references, mirrors all of the above assertions.
