Pleiades Screen Cast: Add Place Manually
"DEPRECATED due to interface changes; revision/replacement coming soon"
"watch the screencast (Quicktime)"
We are going to add a minimal new place to Pleiades, with a single point geometry location and no ancient names.
Assuming we've already logged into the site, our first step is to create a workspace in which to do our editing.
Click "workspaces".
Click "add "workspace"
Give the workspace a title. It's optional to add a description or more descriptive text.
Click "save"
Scroll down. Under "Importing data" we'll find the option to create a new place by manually entering the data.
Click "by creating a single ancient place or accuracy assessment"
Enter a title for the Place. The convention is to use the ancient names of a site (if they're known), separated by slashes. If the site has no known ancient name but does have a modern name, you can enter that. Otherwise, just enter the word "unknown"
From the portal type combo box, select "ancient place"
click "apply"
click "save"
Now we have a basic place resource in Pleiades.
Now we want to manually add the coordinates.
select "add new" and then "ancient location"
enter an appropriate title for the point you want to add
enter the geometry using GeoJSON shorthand representation: note that GeoJSON puts longitude before latitude, unlike google earth
click save
before the editors will clear this place resource for publication, you will need to provide an accuracy assessment, indicating the origin and horizontal accuracy of these coordinates. We will skip this step for the moment because it will be treated in another video.
navigate back to the parent place resource
reload the page to refresh the map
If the map does not refresh immediately, you may need to wait a minute or two for Pleiades to finish indexing your location. You can always use this time to check the location in Google Earth. Click the KML link to download the file.
now you've created -- in draft -- a basic place resource, with a single point-geometry location. You're ready to add details about ancient names, place type and more before submitting your resource for publication.
