The Proper Orthography of "Antiochia ad Maeandrum"

The Barrington Atlas lists Antiochia ad Maeandrum as the location cited by Ptolemy as Ἀντιόχεια πρὸς Μαιάνδρῳ (Geog. 5. 2. 18) and cited by Strabo as ἡ τῶν Ἀντιοχέων πόλις τῶν ἐπὶ Μαιάνδρῳ (13. 4. 15). Livy called it Antiochia super Maeandrum (38. 13. 4). Smith, in his Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography, listed this place as Antiochia ad Maeandrum, just as the compilers of the Barrington Atlas Map 65 did. I have found no Latin source which has this orthography. The NPauly and the TIB Phrygien, the secondary references cited by the compilers, and Smith include only the one Latin reference to Livy.

I suggest therefore:

  • create new names:
    • Ἀντιόχεια πρὸς Μαιάνδρῳ (Greek, geographic; transliteration: Antiocheia pros Maiandro)
      • Primary references: Ptol. Geog. 5. 2. 18.
    • Antiochia super Maeandrum (Latin, geographic)
      • Primary references: Livy 38. 23. 4.

And I ask the Plieades community:

Does anyone know of an ancient Latin author who actually wrote Antiochia ad Maeandrum?

  • If not should we stop referring to this location as such?

Update 6 September 2007

A search of the online "Library of Latin Texts" (CLCLT) returns no example of "Antiochia ad Maeandrum." This is further evidence that the location ought to be called Antiochia super Maeandrum.
